The Naglfar

Only on the day of Ragnarok 

will the Naglfar 

be released from its moorings 

and be allowed to set sail

made from the finger and toenails

of the dead 

the Naglfar is the flagship 

of those who live in Muspelheim

the realm of fire 

the monsters who 

will do battle with the gods.

When Jörmungandr

the Midgardr Serpent

releases its tail 

the sea will rise over the land 

and with violence

overwhelm the earth with its flood

then will Naglfar be loosed

to join the battle 

between the Æsir and their enemies. 

Over the sea from the north

Naglfar sails and at the helm 

stands Loki with the jötunn, the giants

led by Hrym

grey with grime the nail-ship

ghosts across the black ocean

cradling a glowing host of world-destroyers

bright like embers.
