Sleeplessness

I imagine each of you

breathing softly

as you lay in the arms

of your beloved

transported in sleep.

My eyes are open

gazing into the dark

like fixed coins

while the cats run across

the ceiling and stare

with green eyes glowing

in the moonlight.

Sleep has slid through

the hourglass like

pale sand

and it is gone

I have walked

through my dreams

looking for something

else that is lost.

In a few moments

I will get up

and garb myself

in order to battle another day

wrapping my cloth belt

around me like armor

in a ritual of courage.

I am enough

I will be enough again

for one more morning

and afternoon and night

and again and again

putting a foot forward

over and over

so it looks like

walking.
