Mountain
Why do we desire
to break ourselves
against the impossible expanse
to test the limits
of our courage and strength
against the unyielding faces
of the mountains
that cannot shed a tear
for our departure.
There are only a few
who dare to ascend
to the high places of starlight
and storm
why should we seek out
a destination without any refuge
except to say
alone in ourselves we have
everything that
may be needed
to travel on into eternity.
Also to gamble
that we will stay ahead
of the objective danger
each time, for one last time
that an avalanche will not
cast us down from the heavens
and leave us broken
at the foot of the mountain
that we will not be plucked
from the taut ropes
or frozen among our
dead companions
before we can be rescued.
