Kindness
Your kindness comes up
like the sun
it warms me before the sky
has time to unfold
when it is still a thin ridge of blue
under the night covers
and I am stumbling and yawning
through the morning rituals.
Before the first sip of coffee
has awoken my mouth
to the possibility of taste
smiling at you teaches my lips
to curl up again
and frees my eyes
from the web of the dust of sleep.
Let us not count the ways
in which we do not love
in these unguarded moments
our hearts lie open
and friendship is this -
listening to the murmur of dreams
the enunciation of desires
the annunciation of dashed hopes
so we can go again into another
day of yearning.
Every morning
your kindness comes up
like the sun.
