The Ring

Let’s talk about the fallacy

that we are going to love

just one person

which is another of the big lies

we are fed with our magical

breakfast cereal

in the tiny over-packaged

boxes at our grandparents’

along with the idea that

it is my job to be beautiful

and your job to be strong.

If you cling to one person

in the dark ocean of everyday

where the icebergs of cruelty float

like bobbing apples

you are both going under

you are going to need a ring

of lifeboats around you

so you can all take turns

rescuing each other.

Be glad that there

is a ring of love

circling you like torches

and hold hard to your

dear friends, your

armies of deliverance,

because you’re going

to need them out here

where the water is cold

we are all going

to need

one another.
