Sweet Enough

Why should you love the heart of me

why should that be an easy task

since I am filled with anger

since my silences litter the ground

like nails

waiting for your tires to pass over them

and I sprinkle manipulation

over the pastries in the morning

it is as natural to me as breathing

because I was taught

through all these years

to smile and to be nice.

If you cut me in half you’ll find

I am studded with the desire to please

it has been mixed into me

like candied pecans

sweet enough to

break your teeth.

And what is there to like about

any of that

if you are a person of good sense

fortunately for me there will

always be enough fools and tyrants

to go on with.
