Not Enough

We are losing people

and they are young

they are being cut down

in the days of their strength

we have made a world

that betrays them

at every turn

we have envenomed the earth

we are burning and breaking

and creating a trail of poison

without antidote

there are not enough healers

because we do not value the work of healing

there are not enough teachers

because we do not value the work of teaching

and we do not count love

as a gift to share

but rather as a possession to keep safe

these battlefield problems

have me running between victims

trying to make the decision

of whom to save

and I don’t know

what I’m doing.
