Mother of Summer

The Mother of Summer

teaches us about abundance

about what it is like

to have fields ready to harvest

to have plenty so we may gather

bright apples to crush into cider

and pumpkins for pie and

cream to whip into

soft peaks.

She teaches us

how to make music

lying in the sward of grass

under the radiant sun

rocking on the sea of the heavens

with its banners of clouds lofting white

and our fingers just close enough

to touch and twine

together.

In my dream this morning

you held me close

with the affection of friendship

and I thought how little we touch

in this desolate world

where the streets run between us

in every direction

and I wondered if the goddess

would break apart the sidewalks

with green shoots and tiny leaves

and cause the fences to be

covered in flowers

until the earth itself

strikes down the barriers

to our embracing.
