Mirror
I reached through
the mirror
in the night
through the impenetrable
dark of the glass
and the hand that I gripped
on the other side
was not mine.
For a moment
I was sick with terror
afraid of monsters
or humans
or the touch of skin
but you knew it was me
and pulled me out from the dark
into the mirror world
where I have tasted
every delight.
While the days stretch
into weeks
I have been awake
far too often
for a mortal dream
listening while your words
tumble over me
so sweet and haunting
that the music I remember
seems as dull as street noise.
This halcyon place cannot endure
how will I anchor myself
into the earth when
each bite of unearthly food
makes the world spin
and each sip
causes the heartbeat
of the past
to continue to dim.
