I am glad 

to have you in the house

my dearest

shape-shifter

as I know

there is nothing to fear

from men or monsters

when you are here to guard us

through the night hours.

Even though 

the three of us

also have teeth and claws

and though

you are the kindest among us 

and prefer not to indulge

in violence 

there is a safety in 

the knowledge of your strength

that lets me sometimes

close my eyes to sleep.

Also we must 

keep in balance

and I am full of magic

like an ever-flowing cup

and so you must 

be equally powerful

in your own way

so you are not devoured.
