Boudica

If you must fight

the Roman oppressors

who have raped your daughters

lashed you and

despoiled your people

then you should

become a treacherous

lioness

and give thanks

that you are tall and

terrifying.

I too would

butcher the governors

left to administer

the rule of the Romans

and call upon

Andraste

goddess of victory

before my revolt

How dare they take

your estates

treat you as chattel

and allow the centurions

to pillage and seize you

as though you were

prizes of war

after the death of Prasutagus

your husband

ruler of the Iceni.

Let your tawny hair

hang below your waist

until it runs with the blood

of those who have

ravished you

until the golden torc

at your neck

is crusted with gore.

There are none

who know where you fell

when the Romans turned

and crushed your army

women and animals

all were destroyed

and the place of their death is lost

but the echoes of your vengeance

are not forgotten.
